I'm working on a re-edit of Last Man on Earth. There are multiple copies here. The 4:3 version is at http://www.archive.org/details/the-last-man-on-earth while the widescreen version is at http://www.archive.org/details/the_last_man_on_earth_h264. It looks to my eye like the widesceen version is taken form the MGM DVD release (based on the quality and differences in the credits). My question is: is this latter, better release still/really PD and is it safe to edit/release my own version of it?

Unless the company actually did some WORK with restoration AND put a notice in the opening or closing credits, it should be pd, so you should be able to do what you want with it.
